Windmill Block

You need 4 fabrics for this block: a WOW, or white, a medium and a dark in the same color (such as green) and a contrasting medium/dark. We will be making this one 12" finished.

Sewing Instructions:

  1. Mark diagonal on the wrong side of the 4" squares of WOW; match right sides together with Medium/Dark 4" squares; stitch 1/4" on either side of the diagonal mark; cut apart on diagonal mark; press toward Medium/Dark fabric. Square up to 3-1/2".

 

  1. Mark diagonal on the wrong side of the 4-3/8" squares of WOW; match right sides together with Dark 4-3/8" squares; stitch 1/4" on either side of the diagonal mark; cut apart on diagonal mark; press toward Medium/Dark fabric.

  1. Mark diagonal on the wrong side of 4 4" squares of Medium; match right sides together with HSTs from step#2; stitch 1/4" on either side of the diagonal mark; cut apart on diagonal mark; press toward Medium fabric. Square up to 3-1/2".

  1. Cut 4-3/8" squares of Medium/Dark and Dark diagonally into quarters. Stitch one of each together to create unit as shown...be very careful not to stretch bias cut; press toward Dark.

  1. Cut last 2 4" Medium squares in half diagonally. Match with units from step#4 to create unit shown; press toward Medium.

  1. Creating 2 rows...join units together as shown and pressing in direction of arrows. Watch orientation of all units.

  1. Attach row from step#6 to row from step#7...create 2 units pressing toward row from step#6.

  1. Join units from step#8 to create block; press seam to one side.
  2. IMPORTANT: Please square up your finished block to be sure it is 12-1/2". If it is larger or smaller, check your seams and redo if necessary. If you do not check your measurements, your block may not join properly with other blocks easily to create a finished quilt.
