Five Spot Block

You need 3 fabrics for this block: a WOW, or white, a light/medium and a medium/dark. It is recommended that the colors be contrasting, but just not clashing...lol! We will be making this one 12" finished.

Sewing Instructions:
- Mark diagonal on the wrong side of the 2-1/2" squares of WOW and Light/Medium; match right sides together with one corner of the 4-1/2" squares of Medium/Dark; stitch on diagonal line; press open to corner...repeat for all corners. Square up to 4-1/2".

TIP : the units are more stable if the excess fabric is left on, but you could trim the bottom 2 layers to a 1/4" seam if you desire..
TIP: if you trim after you press open and square up...you get less stretching due to the seams on the diagonal.
- Cut in half diagonally: all 3" squares of WOW and all 5" squares of Light/Medium.
- Attach a half-square of WOW to each 2-1/2" square of Medium/Dark as shown...press seam toward half-square.

- Attach a half-square of WOW to units from step#2 as shown...press seam toward half-square.

TIP : attaching the half-squares are easier if you start stitching at the "flat" edge rather than at the "tip".
- Carefully, trim the diagonal edge of units from step#3 to 1/4" seam.
- Attach half-squares of Light/Medium to units from step#5 to create unit shown...press toward Light/Medium. Square up to 4-1/2".

- Creating 2 rows...join units together as shown and pressing in direction of arrows. Watch orientation of units.

- Creating 1 row...join units together as shown and pressing in direction of arrows. Be careful to match center points when joining.

- Attach rows from step#7 to either side row from step#8 to create block...press seams toward outer rows. Be careful to match center points when joining.
IMPORTANT: Please square up your finished block to be sure it is 12-1/2". If it is larger or smaller, check your seams and redo if necessary. If you do not check your measurements, your block may not join properly with other blocks easily to create a finished quilt.

This is what your block might look like. |
