Message from the President

Hello, Everyone!

April showers bring Mayflowers.  I think we got some of our showers in March and here come the flowers.  Inside and outside.  Check out some of the beautiful floral fabrics at your local quilt shops.  I’m sure we’ll be seeing some of them at show and tell soon.   Don’t forget our silent auction will be held at the April meeting.  Do some spring-cleaning and bring your treasures to the meeting.  Don’t forget to bring spending money too.  It’s one of our big fundraisers of the year.   See you at the April meeting.                                                                                       Pam Braeckel, President

Short Mystery Quilt

(part 1)

You will need 3 fabrics.

One focus fabric, which would be a mid-range print (not too large, not too small)

You will need two contrasting fabrics in the same color family or different and one can be slightly darker than the other as long as there will be a good contrast with the focus fabric and with each other.

(If the focus fabric is medium/dark or dark/medium you will need light fabrics for the 2 contrasting  -

Thus if the focus fabric is light/medium or medium/light you will need dark fabrics for the 2 contrasting.)

The yardages are for a lap size quilt, in parentheses yardages will be for a twin size.  The yardages also include border and binding as will as a little extra for trimming the cutting edges.

Color 1 - Focus fabric – 3 yards (5 1/3 yards)

Color 2 – contrast 1  -  1 yard (2 yards)

Color 3 – contrast 2  - 1 ¼ yards (2 ¼ yards)

Cutting the fabrics  (these are the width of the fabrics)

Color 1 (focus fabric)

6 (14) strips at 4 ½”

5 (10) strips at 5 ¼”

2 (4) strips at 6 ½”

6 (9) strips at 4 ½”

Color 2

6 (14) strips at 1 ½”

9 (20) strips at 2”

Color 3

6 (14) strips at 1 ½”

9 (20) strips at 2”

6 (8) strips at 1 ½”

Label all you strips with the size and number of strips for quick reference later.

Now you will need to collect the following strips.

Color 1:  6 (14) – 4 ½” strips

Color 2:  6 (14) – 1 ½” strips

Color 3:  6 (14) – 1 ½” strips

Now sew the color 2 strips to the color 1 strips, right sides together.  Press open toward the focus fabric.  Next sew the color 3 strips to the other side of the color 1 strips, right sides together.  Open and press to the focus fabric.  The strips should now measure 6 ½” wide.

Now cut them into 6 ½” squares.  You should be able to get 6 from each strip and will need 36 (80) each.

Put these squares aside until next month.

Four Corners Quilters Guild

BROWN BAG PROJECT

Find that panel fabric that you just loved, bought, and still have not done anything with, or go find a panel that you would like to see made up.  Everyone MUST get 2 coordinating fabrics for your panel, at least 2 different pieces must be included, along with the panel.  Put all the fabrics in the brown bag and bring it to the May meeting.  Also, include a piece of muslin or label approximately 4” x 6” in you bag.  DO NOT put your name on the label.  Your bag needs to be turned in to the project committee at the beginning of each meeting for tracking and will be re-distributed during the break.

At the April meeting, we will exchange bags and the fun begins!  Each person will now show his or her creative side.  Do not just add a border, maybe think about a ‘small’ border, then put on some appliqué, beads, or anything you can think of, now’s the time to show off that new technique you have learned.  The person adding the border and/or decoration must use some of your enclosed fabric, and can add some fabric of their own chose.  After adding their border the member needs to sign the label provided, put it and the block with the new border and any coordinating fabric back into the bag to bring to the next meeting.

Guidelines:

1. It is important to do your best work and be creative!  Please note multiple borders usually grow in width starting with the narrowest and increasing in width.  Borders should be between 1/2” up to 6”.

2. Repeating colors, fabrics and appliqué or piece designs in the borders help to draw the whole quilt together.

This exchange will continue each month for three months.  The fourth month you will get your own block back in time for ‘Show & Tell’.  Then it is time to include your own name on the label and finish your quilt.  It will be a treat to see the results at our July meeting so join the fun!

IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO ATTEND A MEETING, PLEASE MAKE ARRANGEMENTS FOR YOUR BAG TO COME!
