2007 Short Mystery Quilt

(part 1)

You will need 3 fabrics.

One focus fabric, which would be a mid-range print (not too large, not too small)

You will need two contrasting fabrics in the same color family or different and one can be slightly darker

than the other as long as there

will be a good contrast with the focus fabric and with each other.

(If the focus fabric is medium/dark or dark/medium you will need light fabrics for the 2 contrasting  -

Thus if the focus fabric is light/medium or medium/light you will need dark fabrics for the 2 contrasting.)

The yardages are for a lap size quilt, in parentheses yardages will be for a twin size.  The yardages also include

border and binding as

will as a little extra for trimming the cutting edges.

Color 1 - Focus fabric – 3 yards (5 1/3 yards)

Color 2 – contrast 1  -  1 yard (2 yards)

Color 3 – contrast 2  - 1 ¼ yards (2 ¼ yards)

Cutting the fabrics  (these are the width of the fabrics)

Color 1 (focus fabric)

6 (14) strips at 4 ½”

5 (10) strips at 5 ¼”

2 (4) strips at 6 ½”

6 (9) strips at 4 ½”

Color 2

6 (14) strips at 1 ½”

9 (20) strips at 2”

Color 3

6 (14) strips at 1 ½”

9 (20) strips at 2”

6 (8) strips at 1 ½”

Label all you strips with the size and number of strips for quick reference later.

Now you will need to collect the following strips.

Color 1:  6 (14) – 4 ½” strips

Color 2:  6 (14) – 1 ½” strips

Color 3:  6 (14) – 1 ½” strips

Now sew the color 2 strips to the color 1 strips, right sides together.  Press open toward the focus fabric.  Next sew the

color 3 strips to the other side of the color 1 strips, right sides together.  Open and press to the focus fabric.  The strips

should now measure 6 ½” wide.

Now cut them into 6 ½” squares.  You should be able to get 6 from each strip and will need 36 (80) each.

Put these squares aside until next month.

2007 Short Mystery Quilt

(part 2)

Welcome Back!

Please read all of these instructions al the way through before you begin.  You will need to gather the following from

your stash of pieces and subcut as directed.

Color 1:         5(10) 5 ¼” strips

      Subcut by 5 ¼” for 36 (80) 5 ¼” squares

Color 2:         9(20) 2” strips

      Subcut by 9 ½” for 36 (80) 2” x 9 ½” strips

Color 3:         9(20) 2” strips

      Subcut by 9 ½” for 36 (80) 2” x 9 ½” strips

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now we will need from these pieces:

Color 1:  18(40) 5 ¼” squares

Color 2:  18(40) 2” x 9 ½” strips

Color 3:  18(40) 2” x 9 ½” strips

Yes – we are only going to use half of what we just subcut and we are going to put the rest away – NOW.

This is important so that no errors are made from this point on.  There is a method to the madness… and a reason

for putting the other half of these pieces away that will be revealed later in another part.

                                                    2007 Short Mystery Quilt

                                                     (part 3)

                                        IT’S FINALLY HERE!!!!!!

You will need the instructions from part 4, so go find them.

Now this time you will be switching the colors, so you may want to mark the changes with your pencil to be

sure you get them correct.

As before, square these blocks (centering) to 6 ½”.

Now take you color 1, 6 ½” strips and subcut them to 6 ½” blocks.  You need 9 (20) each of these squares.

Now it’s time to put it all together.

This is a simple 9-patch... IF you place your “x” blocks and rail blocks according to this pattern.  This is

important to put it together like this, if you make a mistake – unsew it.  Piecing this block is important to the

overall pattern for the quilt… as you will see.
